Harold D. Portnoy, M.D. has spent nearly forty years in the practice of neurosurgery in southeast Michigan and is the senior member of the Michigan Head and Spine Institute (MHSI). He is Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery and Director of Research at the MHSI. Dr. Portnoy is Attending Neurosurgeon at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital - Oakland (Pontiac), Crittenton Hospital Medical Center (Rochester) and North Oakland Medical Center (Pontiac).

Dr. Portnoy is a board certified neurosurgeon with extensive experience in both adult and pediatric neurosurgery including the treatment of brain and spinal tumors, cerebrovascular disease, pediatric neurosurgical diseases and minimally invasive surgery for herniated disc and spinal stenosis. He is a world recognized authority in the treatment of childhood and adult hydrocephalus (water on the brain) for which he received the Robert H. Pudenz Award for Excellence in CSF (Cerebrospinal Fluid) Physiology.

A native Michigander, Dr. Portnoy grew up in Detroit and attended Wayne State University and the Wayne State University School of Medicine. His neurosurgical training was with the well known Dr. E.S. Gurdjian, one of the first neurosurgeons in Michigan. On completion of his residency training, Dr. Portnoy went into the private practice of neurosurgery in Pontiac while maintaining academic positions that included Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Wayne State University and Clinical Professor of Medical Physics at Oakland University. Though in private practice, he has continued life long, basic research related to brain function, hydrocephalus and raised pressure within the head. He has received the Excellence in Research Award of the Oakland Health Education Program Center for Medical Education.

Dr. Portnoy is a member of many national and international neurosurgical organizations including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS); Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), American College of Surgeons; International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery; Society for Research into Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida; Pediatric Section of the AANS; Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves of the AANS and the American Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (Honorary). Hospital appointments have included Chief of the Division of Neurological Surgery, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and Chief of the Department of Surgery, Crittenton Hospital. Other appointments include the Joint Council of State Neurosurgical Societies; National Head and Spinal Cord Injury Prevention Program; Mental Illness Research Association (MIRA, founding member); Advisory Board, College of Arts and Sciences, Oakland University and Oakland University Center for Biomedical Research Strategic Planning Task Force. Dr. Portnoy is also a Consulting Editor of the international neurosurgical journal, Surgical Neurology.

As an active member of the community, Dr. Portnoy has received the March of Dimes Humanitarian of the Year Award, the Gold Key Award of MIRA and the Pat Elwell 'Above and Beyond' Award (MIRA).
