portnoysOn behalf of Michigan Head & Spine Institute we would like to congratulate Dr. Harold and Lynne Portnoy for their hard work and for receiving the 2012 Mercy Legacy Award for their many years of service to St. Joseph Mercy Oakland and their volunteerism throughout the community.

A graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Portnoy spent more than 40 years in the practice of neurosurgery, serving as the senior member at Michigan Head & Spine Institute (MHSI). With extensive experience in both adult and pediatric neurosurgery, he is a world-recognized authority in the treatment of childhood and adult hydrocephalus (water in the brain). His career at St. Joe's spanned 1965 through 2011, he served as the hospital's Chief of Staff from 2004 to 2005 and he currently serves on St. Joe's Foundation Board. Dr. Portnoy's many awards include the Excellence in Research Award of the Oakland Health Education Program Center for Medical Education, the March of Dimes Humanitarian of the Year Award, and the Gold Key Award of the Mental Illness Research Association.

Lynne Portnoy actually was born at St. Joe's and then, after earning her nursing degree at Ferris State University, she worked as an RN at St. Joe's from 1976 to 1979. She went on to work in pharmaceutical sales and training, and became an active community volunteer for many projects. She formed the Pediatric component of the Think First Foundation, a head injury prevention program developed by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons to promote the use of bicycle helmets, gun safety and diving safety. She served on the boards of Planned Parenthood of Detroit, Oakland University School of Arts and Sciences, The Women's Committee for Hospice Care, and the Mercy Education Project. Since its inception, Lynne has assisted St. Joe's in the development and growth of Fall Spectacular, helping to make it the successful event that it is today.
